Kitchen Renovation Project

Thanks to Susan Dudley for her design of this project.

The existing Kitchen was outdated and felt very cramped. The owners were looking to create a modern Kitchen with a more spacious feel. This new area had to handle the family’s daily routine and also be capable of entertaining guests. They also requested “Locker” style storage, increased Pantry storage, a separate prep sink area and the incorporation a wine cooler.

The existing Kitchen had a mix of plaster, drywall, hardwood flooring, vinyl flooring and other various materials thanks to multiple past renovations. The first thing we did was relocate the existing Laundry Room to the second floor so that the owner would still have use of their washer and dryer during the renovation. The Kitchen was gutted down the framing. One of the walls removed was a substantial load bearing wall and we had to have a “Tube” style beam designed so that we could install it flush in the existing ceiling with no visible signs that it was there. Once the structural beam was installed and the framing was complete we could begin roughing in the new electrical, plumbing and mechanical lines. We worked with the designer to incorporate the new ducting for the range hood so it would be hidden in the existing ceiling. The existing electrical breaker box had to be relocated to allow for the new Prep Area. Sound insulation was installed in the ceiling to help reduce the noise from the Game Room above.

The finish stage is where this project really started to take shape. All of the cabinetry was custom made by a local millwork shop. This allowed for more flexibility with the cabinet design and resulted in a quicker turn-around time for delivery and install. The large Island provides ample seating. Lockers were designed as a “wall of cabinetry” to separate the Kitchen from the side entry area. A tongue and groove ceiling adds character to the space. The mix of marble and wood counter tops is a great combination of aesthetics and functionality. Finally, new plumbing fixtures, electrical fixtures and appliances make the Kitchen come to life.

The new open floor plan (which incorporates the Kitchen, Breakfast Room, Pantry, Side Entry, and Prep Area) provides a much larger space for the family to enjoy their time together. This Kitchen project was well designed and well executed. The owners are extremely happy with the result and now spend a great deal of time together in their new space.
